This drawing is based on a photograph we took of an oil rig off the coast of Dauphin Island, Alabama at the approximate location of the 1724 shipwreck of the Bellone, a merchant vessel captained by a gay man named Jeremgy Beauchamp that was carrying the first commercial shipment of indigo pigment from the Louisiana Colony back to France. This shipwreck, the history of Beauchamp and his affair with his cabin boy, and the complex legacy of Indigo in Louisiana became the focus of our “50 States: Louisiana”
