This drawing is based on a photograph we took of the building that served as the mess hall and kitchen of a remote sheep camp near Trinidad, Colorado where Charles “Frenchy” Vosbaugh, who we would now likely identify as a transgender man, cooked for decades in the late 1800s. Still standing at the heart of the nation’s second-largest military maneuvering grounds, this sheep camp and Frenchy’s extraordinary story anchor “50 States: Colorado”
