50 STATES > Project Overview

In 2014 we moved from New York to Houston to research and develop 50 States: Texas. In 2016 we split our time between Houston and Tulsa as part of the inaugural class of the Tulsa Artist Fellowship to make 50 States: Oklahoma.

Over the next 35 years we will visit each state and work with local partners (libraries, activists, academics, gay bars, etc) to identify an under-appreciated, forgotten, or recently uncovered facet of each state’s pre-Stonewall queer history. In addition to creating distinct interdisciplinary installations in response to these narratives we are developing artist talks that tie each narrative to related contemporary threads.
